Program Note

During a residency at Saint Paul Academy in 1998, I was asked by an enterprising 8th grader, Jocelyn Herzog to write a piece for her clarinet trio. I played a lot of trumpet trios as a student and enjoy the texture of three equal instruments. Here we explore leaps, undulations and close canon in the clarinet's watery medium. Three from the Sea has also been played as a basset-horn trio.
