Program Notes

Ovid provided the starting point for my first work for oboe and strings: "While Pan sighed, the soft air stirring in the reeds made also the echo of a sigh." The image suggested a texture of rocking string chords, with an imitative oboe entrance. The first movement then proceeds abstractly on its way, without a program, as a wistful lament in three-part form. The second movement, in loose sonata form, employs folkish, often conflicting, dance rhythms under a sturdy, motivic oboe tune. Throughout, the harmonic language is tonally directed and primarily diatonic.
