Commissioned by Dr. Jane Van Dyk in memory of John and Elizabeth Hauck.
Premiere-1992 by the Yellowstone Chamber Players, Moose Lake, MT.

Program Notes

Commissioned by Jane Van Dyk in memory of her parents, Elizabeth and John Hauck, The Leaves bee Greene was sketched in their lovely cabin overlooking Moose Lake on the first of many visits to the Van Dyk cabins at that lake in the Pintlar Mountains.

The famous renaissance ballad "The leaves bee greene" appears in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book. There is no musical connection between the song and my work, but the liveliness of the Elizabethan spirit is reflected in its polyphony, rhythmic style and thematic treatment. Listen for the return of the first movement theme as a duet in two voices over a repeating bass in the last movement. Leaves was premiered outdoors at Moose Lake, on a blazing day in August 1992.
