Program Note
The 300-plus cantigas compiled at the court of King Alfonso el Sabio offer a wealth of melody and praise to the Virgin. In creating an instrumental setting of the first cantiga, "Des oge mais" (From this day forth), I wove lines around the melody much the way one might adorn a manuscript with illuminations. One of the last lines of the text suggested a title: "I do not wish to forget how the angels sang in praise of God and 'peace on earth.'"
